AS 9110 Quality Management System for MRO

Introduction

This standard includes ISO 9001:2000 quality management system requirements and specifies additional requirements for a quality management system for aerospace maintenance organizations. The additional aerospace requirements are shown in bold, italic text.

It is emphasized that the quality management system requirements specified in this standard are complementary (not alternative) to contractual and applicable law and regulatory requirements.

This International Standard specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization

A. needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements, and

B. aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable regulatory requirements.

NOTE: In this International Standard, the term "product" applies only to the product intended for, or required by, a customer.

SAE Aerospace, an SAE International Group and the aerospace industry established the International Aerospace Quality Group (lAQG) for the purpose of achieving significant improvements in quality and safety, and reductions in cost, throughout the value stream. This organization includes representation from aerospace companies in the Americas , Asia Pacific, and Europe . AS 9100 standard has been prepared by the lAQG.

SAE maintains liaisons with a number of organizations to fully coordinate its standards, as well as to avoid duplication. Particular effort is made to exchange information with the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), Airlines Electronic Engineering Committee (ARINC/AEEC), the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA), the Air Transport Association (ATA), the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA), European Organization for Civil Aviation Equipment (EUROCAE), European Association of Aerospace Equipment Manufacturers (AECMA), International Air Transport Association (IATA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Department of Defense(DoD), Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), American Welding Society (AWS), and Transport Canada.

With worldwide progress in trade liberalization, the increasing import of global economics and the move to more multinational ventures, SAE continues to strive to be a leader in international standardization.

SAE is the administrator of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO Technical Committee 20 - Aircraft and Space Vehicles, and is the International Secretariat for two of its subcommittees, i.e., ISO/TC20/SC9 - Air Cargo and Ground Equipment and ISO/TC20/SC10 - Aerospace Fluid systems and Components. Many SAE air and space committees interface with ISO and provide the majority of the U.S. delegates to their ISO counterpart committees. These activities stimulate communication among international techical experts and provide a valuable service to the international aerospace community.

New efforts in the areas of increased international liaison and international document harmonization will allow SAE to continue to meet the needs of national and international customers.

Being ever aware of health and safety aspects of the aerospace industry, SAE has established a committee to investigate the growing flight safety concerns in the area of outdoor laser displays. In addition, SAE is developing guidelines for the technical standards committees to ensure that new standards are environmentally conscious and sound.

AS 9110 standardizes, to the greatest extent possible, quality management system requirements for the aerospace industry. The establishment of common requirements, for use at all levels of the supply‑chain, by organizations around the world, should result in improved quality and safety, and decreased costs, due to the elimination or reduction of organization‑unique requirements and the resultant variation inherent in these multiple expectations.

ISO (the International Organisation for Standardisation) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees.

International Standard ISO 9001:2000 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 176, Quality Management and quality assurance, subcommittee SC2, Quality Systems.

ISO 9001:2000 is the third edition of ISO 9001. This third edition of ISO 9001 cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 9001:1994) together with ISO 9002:1994 and ISO 9003:1994. It constitutes a technical revision of these documents. Those organisations which have used ISO 9002:1994 and ISO 9003:1994 in the past may use this International Standard by excluding certain requirements in accordance with 1.2 of the ISO 9001:2000 requirements.

ISO 9001:2000 international standard specifies requirements for a quality management system when an organisation

  • needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide product that meets customer and applicable regulatory requirements, and
  • aims to enhance customer satisfaction through the effective application of the system, including processes for continual improvement of the system and the assurance of conformity to customer and applicable regulatory requirements.
