In
1999, IPC changed its name from Institute of Interconnecting and
Packaging Electronic Circuits to IPC. Our name is accompanied by
an identity statement, Association Connecting Electronics
Industries.
Since 1957, IPC—Association Connecting Electronics Industries®
has been guiding the electronic interconnection industry through
its dramatic changes. A global trade association dedicated to
the competitive excellence and financial success of its almost
2, 200 member companies, IPC is the only electronic interconnect
organization that brings together all industry players,
including designers, board manufacturers, assembly companies,
suppliers, and original equipment manufacturers.
As
a member-driven organization and leading source for industry
standards, training, market research and public policy advocacy,
IPC supports programs to meet the needs of a $40 billion U.S.
industry that employs more than 350,000 people. The Association
also provides its members with countless opportunities to
network—the ultimate renewable resource and a cornerstone of IPC
membership since day one—through its international tradeshows,
educational programs, technical conferences and online seminars.
Our Mission
IPC is a United States-based trade association dedicated to
furthering the competitive excellence and financial success of
its members worldwide, who are participants in the electronic
interconnect industry.
In
pursuit of these objectives, IPC will devote resources to
management improvement and technology enhancement programs, the
creation of relevant standards, protection of the environment,
and pertinent government relations.
IPC encourages the active participation of all its members in
these activities and commits to full cooperation with all
related national and international organizations.

History of
IPC’s Name
IPC was founded in 1957 as the Institute for Printed Circuits.
As more electronics assembly companies became involved with the
association, the name was changed to the Institute for
Interconnecting and Packaging Electronic Circuits. By the 1990s,
most people in the industry could not remember the full name
and/or didn't agree on what the words in the name meant.
Members expressed overwhelming approval for keeping the initials
IPC. Research indicated that there was no one word or expression
that adequately describes IPC's constituency - OEMs, board
manufacturers, electronics manufacturing services companies and
their suppliers. To avoid another awkward name or a name that
excludes any of our members, the IPC Board of Directors agreed
to make IPC the formal name of the organization.
Our board selected "Association Connecting Electronics
Industries" as the perfect complement to our name because it
expresses IPC's mission of networking and technical exchange as
well emphasizing the importance of the printed circuit board.
